At least that's how I felt when I watched it, and it is a shame because someone who speaks so eloquently through his art must have had a deep and interesting mind and personality. Additionally, I felt that there was a lack of direction to the plot, it was boring to watch, and I don’t feel any more knowledgeable about Turner’s life. I love art and I love art history and I was excited to learn more about Turner with this movie. As someone else remarked the acting of Dorothy Atkinson as Hannah, Turner's housekeeper is amazing. Beautiful cinematography would be the only reason to watch this. Beauty on the canvas doesn't necessarily translate to beauty in life and this post Napoleonic era has its fair share of crass vulgarity and grime. This movie was awful. Rob & I watched it twice, which I recommend because it's such a rich film, you'll notice many more details during a second viewing. I am grading this 3* because there needs to be a warning ...... this is not an educational documentary discussing the life and works of Turner ....... more a celebration of classic British cinema with a calssic British actor characterising the life of J M W Turner ....... so if you what a rounded look at Turner will need the two academic i.e.

Like Beethoven, his contemporary, Turner was a genius and a monomaniac whose pursuit of his art ruled his life.

And Timothy Spall isn't allowed to do much more than look grumpy and grunt - a different director might have allowed his main character to have more color. Directed by Mike Leigh. I'd have given more stars for Mr Spall's acting but was voting on the actual film which threw me a bit as it wasn't what I was expecting.

Seriously, look up his self-portrait. I literally fast forwarded through the last half of the movie and was sad to discover that the end was just as uneventful and emotionless as the rest of the movie. It was very well staged and shot but there was nothing gripping about the story. Timothy Spall is amazing in this film and the class and lifestyle of Mr Turner was quite a surprise.

This movie missed a huge opportunity to cover so much more of his life. Then I watched a little more. I got the impression it had been put together as pieces of known information or situations in Turner's life a bit like a patchwork quilt where squares of knowledge were sewn together.
