The steady nature of the climb made it doable for her. The low end of the times in this post is a constant fast pace uphill with little to no breaks and a brisk pace downhill.

Continue up McConnell Ridge until the radio reflector comes into view. You can either take the trail back to the car park or walk along the Barrier Lakeshore for better views. If you’re slogging this hike in one day, you may want to take the slightly shorter route through Taylor Meadows.
The elevation on here is incorrect; it’s around 600m or so.
We took the Stoney Trail on the way back. Barrier Lake visit We visited Barrier Lake last week (end of August) and the views/scenery was fantastic. Nice wide trail with gradual elevation gain and great views at the top. Was about an hour or so up then we decided to go down a different way, which added an extra 3 hours but it was a much more gradual decline vs. the steep portion before you summit. Saw a few people mountain biking. best views we have seen this summer from the summit. The trail technically isn’t maintained – but don’t worry, it’s still easy, just slightly steeper and rockier to the summit of Yates Mountain and the Barrier Lake Fire Lookout.
If you want to learn more about For long hikes, set a turn around time at the departure. At just under an hour up, it can quickly be done at sunrise or sunset as well.After parking near Barrier Lake follow the AllTrails Map past the sign for Barrier Lake. To get to the lookout point requires a gradual uphill climb to the top, but it will get your heart rate up as you are gaining 756 meters of elevation. Fun trail! It is a nice bike trail though if you are looking for one.I think folks get this one - as mapped - confused with going up to the summit. Don’t forget to enjoy the views of Mount Baldy straight ahead of you.You won’t be able to miss Barrier Lake on the right-hand side of the road when coming from Calgary. He's become quite the competent scrambler on loose terrain and I'm happy to call him my favourite hiking partner. After you turn from the Stony Nakoda Casino and head into Kananaskis, you won’t drive for more than 5 minutes before arriving at Barrier Lake. It's an easy hike with little scrambling or off trail hiking, and great for fall thanks to a wide well maintained trail for most of the distance.
Good for dogs. Continue along the trail, which zig-zags across a creek several times and eventually meets the Stoney Trail along the lakeshore. It’s a smooth well-maintained trail the entire way, with stunning views over Barrier Lake. Someone actually lives there and can see if you take a nosy peek into his windows.

Not a lot of tree coverage on the hike. The trail up to the lookout point is pretty boring. It was all up hill, levels out a bit throughout.
This is not it. The hike starts at the Barrier Dam day use area and you'll begin by hiking around the nearest side of Barrier Lake until you come to a junction with the Stoney Trail at approximately 1.6 km. Steady inclines up on the way up. Prepare for a good workout. The trail is well maintained and easy to find.Not really exciting as the trail is just on the side of the lake.
The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and running and is best used from March until November. A great hike close to town.Very nice trail! This was not really a hike for leisurely afternoon. The trail will break left or right, with a sign saying it is not maintained any further if you take a right.Take a left for the viewpoint, you’ll find a large slab, likely with some other hikers on it. Nice views! The confusion begins. This was my first hike. We decided to do the loop trail which took about 1 hour and 15 minutes down, mainly due to the long walk along Barrier Lake at the bottom.
When that is full, cars will start to park along Highway 40. Barrier Lake Lookout Hike . Any time we set out for an objective I determine a time at which we need to turn around in order to arrive at the parking lot or campsite by dark. we did it counter clockwise and were glad we did.This hike is just the trail along the lake, if you want that candid shot on a cliff, that’s up toward jewel pass.
It provides more views over Kananaskis and features Jewell Falls.
The trail starts from Barrier Dam day use area, which is one of the first turn offs on Highway 40, making this one of the best close-to-Calgary hikes. There is little elevation gain for the first kilometer until the trail divides and becomes Stony and Prairie View Trails. Nice water fall.
Even active grandparents will enjoy!If this is your first time hiking in the Rockies take a conservative approach.
Enjoy the views over Kananaskis and the plains.Head back down the lookout point. Longer but more enjoyable and easier.
