The family that lives on the corner came driving past when we stopped in on our way home to Calgary screaming out the window to get out of the town . They said there was a sign at an entrance of the town saying it was closed but that wasIt was small, and cute.. we didnt stay long but saw some sites, creepy mannequins in the windows.
However one of these fine folks took us into the saloon and allowed us to look around. Not a fast food restaurant but dedicated volunteers that cook up a mean pizza 30 at a time. It is worth seeing. But the townsfolk, a meager population of eight, have transformed the place into a fascinating heritage site for tourists. Calico offers 265 camping sites with accommodations for RV’s with full and partial hook-ups as well as group tent camping sites. the last weekend of every month there is a pizza night and a live band planing, it is a lot of fun. Definitely worth stopping in!The day we were there it truly was a ghost town as this is not open every day because it really is not on the beaten track. As we were walking by a house a lady popped out and told us tours would be available after 10:00.
Rowley Ghost Town, Rowley Alberta. We stopped here while on a tour of the area with Wild West Badlands Tours. Well worth the drive from Calgary. I was definitely impressed when I arrived to see the amazing shape that the buildings are in still. Town buildings interesting to check out. The day we were there there were only two local people in the town so most doors were locked.
Will definitely be going back during summer when the buildings are open and accessible. Local folks very friendly and get in line to order pizza at 5 or earlier. More than your average ghost town, Rowley has its fair share of abandoned buildings and deserted railway cars.

We went for a tour at 10:00 which took us inside many of the buildings and the young guide seemed really knowledgeable. Sam's Cafe became Sam's Saloon . Will definitely be going back during summer when the buildings are open and accessible.

Watch for an update once we line up entertainment for these months! But please be respectful of the town and surrounding residence, don't drink and drive, and please clean up after yourselves. The nearest paved highway is 5km away but don't let that be a deterrent. There is a general store, a saloon, a pool hall, a community center, etc.
