Trail around lake is more like 1.75 miles. Drive around the Lake and take a left towards the far parking area.

We did Black Elk Peak via the Little Devil's Tower trail and made it a loop with Sylvan Lake trail 9 My mom and I took this trail when we met up in Hill City for a short weekend. There was no swimming in the lake when we were there and several nearby trails were closed due to wildfires.So crowded it wasn’t worth it.
Sylvan Lake has been one of the park's most popular spots since before the park even existed and because of that, it has almost every amenity imaginable from rooms and fine-dining in the historic Sylvan Lake Lodge, to campsites (sorry, no large RVs or trailers), a general store, amazing hiking trails and more. On the backside of the lake, there is some rock scrambling (very minor) that you have to do to stay on the trail and there are a few stairs back there as well.Turns out Sylvan Lake isn’t natural.
Summer could get hot and buggy and spring might not be as colorful, so if I was picking, which I guess I am, fall would be best, but really anything but winter is good because you can’t even get to it then since the Needles Highway is closed in winter.I just love to read about the lpaces you’ve hiked, and so share the experience!Hey there! The weather was also perfect. We went in early October and got to see the leaves changing which was fantastic. There is some rock scrambling you can do to get up a little higher for better views, but be careful, the rocks were pretty slippery. Nice views of the lake, and fairly easy. Sylvan Lake Shore Trail is a 1.1 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Custer, South Dakota that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, camping, and fishing and is best used from April until October. Better for kayaks etc and has a trail.Nice walk around a pretty lake. Easy. Much larger. It’s in I think two hours should be plenty for this, maybe even closer to an hour actually. It’s so pretty with the leaves changing and the rock spires coming out of the water and along the shore are just so cool. Kids loved climbing on rocks. Add Your Trails. Half of the Gulch Trail you're walking right next to the main road, there's a lot of power lines, and currently a motorcycle ralley is going on. I won’t lie, that took away some of the charm for me, but when you’re up on top it’s just so pretty it’s hard to be mad it’s not real.Is this the coolest hike ever? Lots of road noise about halfway through, which is the only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5.A main area of Custer state park. From here you will find Trail#9, a 1300 foot, 6 mile round trip hike to the summit of Harney Peak. The trail may be accessed at various points along the lakeshore. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.A nice walk around Lake Sylvan. Beautiful views of sylvan lake and the rock formations. Not a fan of road noise when it gets close near one of the tunnels but the views and the trails are great.Easy loop around lake. It could be a nice place to have a picnic lunch along the Needles Highway. Overall, great trail.
