Thankfully, a trail system allows visitors to explore some of the wild sections of river, and road access makes enjoying the water relatively easy for fishermen and swimming hole aficionados.Just 1.4 miles from the covered bridge at Westfir sits the first of several great swimming holes on the Middle Fork North Fork. It passes through former agricultural lands, restored prairie and a small wetland area frequented by herons. “You can have your drinking water supply with much less environmental impact.”Far downriver from the dam, close to where the Nooksack River drains into Bellingham Bay, there’s a sand spit on the Lummi Nation’s territory.Merle Jefferson, a Lummi member and the tribe's director of natural resources, said this spit didn’t used to be here.“This river used to be really, really, really deep,” he explained.Jefferson said he used to fish full-time, but there aren’t enough fish left for that.“This is a fishing village where I stayed as a small boy, and this is where my dad fished and my grandpa fished,” he said. Middle Fork offers more than seven miles of trails: This trail travels through a variety of habitats including an oak/hickory forest, a prairie rich with wildflowers, and a river bottomland forest. Raccoons leave tracks in wet areas and live in the trees along the trail.
